I am a 52 year old female that is living on $9.00 per hour with no insurance of any kind.  I have not been able to afford to go to a dentist for several years now and I am in danger of losing enough teeth that I won't be able to eat.  I don't want to lose my teeth and have spent a lot of years and money trying to take care of them.  I have had my wisdom teeth pulled and am in danger of losing the only other teeth I can use to chew food. The back teeth on both sides of my mouth in the bottom of my mouth have broken apart.  They had so much filling in them and now they are just pieces left.  I can not chew anything for fear of breaking them even more and being in constant pain.  I just need to have the massive fillings put back in my mouth for the time being.  I can not afford to have crowns at this time and I just want to be able to keep the teeth.  Can you please help me.

in response to raiders19...   You are faced with an interesting situation ... pay a bunch to fix your teeth or pay much less to get dentures. If you want to retain your teeth and go forward with repairs, consider dental schools. Dental schools might be a good source for a bunch of work. You will still need to pay but the overall costs should be a fraction of the a typical quote. Since you have already been evaluated, keep a list of all things needed - this will help to receive more accurate quotes. In fact, you should be able to phone around for quotes knowing exactly what is needed. One more thought - consider Mexico!:) The dental costs in Mexico is a fraction of the fees in the US. Take care and God Bless!

I am 30 years old and have VERY bad teeth. I have had bad teeth since I was a little kid. I have had fillings in most of my kiddy teeth. Growing up I made some really bad choices in my life, some of which have effective my teeth now. I had gotten into alot of trouble in my early 20's and have learned my lesson since then. after all that I have found GOD and he has really turned my life around. Everything in my life now is GREAT, except for my teeth. I have lost so many that I can not even eat right anymore. I have visited many dentist for free estimates and the lowest I can find is around $10,00 unless I get dentures. I really dont want dentures at the age of 30. If you have any suggestions PLEASE let me know. I dont have alot of money and NO insurance. I have tried to get the loans for it but I do not qualify and have been turned down left and right. Im at the point where i am begging everyone for advice. Thank you so much for your time. GOD BLESS!!

in response to C J...   Hi CJ ... sounds like you are heading in the right direction!:) I appreciate those who serve our country. Are you certain the service will not address your dental needs? I know a handful of people that had major dental work done after they joined. MEPS gave them the green light during processing and after boot camp, they received the help needed. Take care and God Bless!

A handful of new clinics have been added to list and I see over 110 in the state of Washington. Try to find a nearby clinic for help. A cavity left untreated can turn into something more costly.          in response to surprise...   It is an interesting question. I've never seen any prophylactic procedures under sedation; not only in MD but other states as well ( graduated from NYU). You can ask your dentist or hygienist to be careful and gentle with you for whatever reason, you can be anesthetized in those areas that might be most sensitive during the procedure, you can try to arrange it in several appointments and do it half and half ( upper right/lower right in one appointment and upper left/lower left in another) like for the deep cleaning. I mean you can discuss different options/ways to do this and will definitely find the way that will fit your needs if you really ready for it. Keep in mind that dentists are people as well and might be willing to talk :) I'm pretty sure you will find the doctor who can help you without sedation. Cleaning is a prophylactic procedure, not a treatment and can not be that bad; just find the right person -that one who's right for you."Sleep or something" - you don't need to be put asleep and "something" can be just a nice friendly person who is not crazy about hurting people. Good luck

One of my reasons for losing my job or jobs I should say as, I worked 2 of them was due to a irregular heartbeat as well as dental troubles . I would like to know what assistance I could recieve for myself as well as my daughter who is now over the age 18 yrs. old. I lost my mother to cancer and my father from a Navy injury they were my backbone . I pray for a miracle for my daughter, myself and each person in need of any type of dental or medical assistance as disability has been very slow to give any aid to me. God bless and Thanks for any guidance.

I am a 26 yr old unemployed mother of one. My babys father gets VA disability which is all we are currently living off right now. My credits bad because of. student loans that went to collections that I can't pay off. Dshs said I dont qualify for any medical or dental of any kind because I'm not blind, deaf, mentally disabled, or pregnant. We cant afford payments. I grew up in poverty. The only time I got new toothpaste, floss, or toothbrush, was when I went to the dentist. Which is why I had my first filling at age 7. My first root canal at age 16. I try my best to take care of my teeth, but its not enough. I have to use pain medication, tooth numbing gel, sensodyne toothpaste, and the power of prayer. I have at least one absest tooth, another one thats swollen and leaks puss. The last time I was at the dentist 7 years ago they said I had 15 cavities. Sometimes my jaw and ear hurt. Its hard to function, I chew on one side of my mouth hoping there wont be pain on that side. I live in southwest Washington. Please help

Hi, Yep, another hopelessly doomed person to have broken, unpleasant teeth, All because these Dentists cannot seem to offer any "Pro-Bono" work, Or even the decency to give a "Sliding Scale fee" And the States we live in, can't seem to understand that Dental work is a necessity, not a luxury. YES, I was employed and kept up with my teeth just like so many others. Till I got hurt on the job. My compensation is 60% of my low paying crap job,I took because I needed money. So I worked a bad job. Now I am in a wheelchair. Now I too cannot find any help to fix my broken rotted teeth. Isn't this GREAT? Too bad there's so many of us.

It's really sad to me that in this whole country nobody cares. I've worked my whole life in Cardiology doing stress test on people saving many lives and yet I can't find any dental help, listen people if I had the money I would not ask for help but I don't have money so what happens now, I have to suffer. It seems that our government is only interested in the infidelity of the presidential candidates who cares they are all crooks, self centered and to be honest very selfish I wonder what would happen if their family members needed medical help and they couldn't afford it. I don't care about who's sleeping with who. HEY GOVERNMENT help us.

in response to NeedASmileBack...   Hello ... as anther poster mentioned, find a clinic that will offer sliding scale fees. I have maintained a growing list of clinics over the years and just about all of them charged based on income. In some cases, if you have nothing, you are charged nothing. Since you only have five months before you wedding, time might be an issue. Most clinics are full and you will need to be patient.

Get evaluated first to determine if pulling teeth is the best option. If a healthy tooth can be saved, consider doing so:) Take care and God Bless!

When you pull your teeth jawbone starts receding and later in your life you might face a serious problems to fit any removable prosthesis since you won't have sufficient amount of bone/support to hold it in place - very unpleasant experience and extremely expensive to fix.Good luck

They saw my ex, when he had a bad tooth, gave him antibiotics, pain medicine, and referred him to an oral surgeon who went on a sliding scale fee based on income. That is probably the best bet, if you can get in. These state/ federal run agencies are becoming harder to get in due to the recent surge of immigration & population. Hope that helped some :)

I'm having some problems with my teeth myself but no luck finding help... sorry. All I can say from experience: brush teeth as much as possible with a manual tooth brush, rinse mouth with peroxide (get a 20oz bottle of water - fill half way with peroxide - the other half, half water, half mouthwash for flavor), if you have swollen gum try to get your hands on some Penicillin that will help with the infection, if you have pain make sure the pain killers you are taking have Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin... ), try to stay away from sweets! some of these stories are similar to mine and it pains me even more that nobody has the compassion to help another human being in need... I almost hate being part of this country, especially when I get those severe tooth aches, that I would sell my U.S. citizenship for some dental work or money for dental work! I'm not sure if thats possible. If so, it would be so worth it! This pain is not worth the "freedom" to be a slave to the wage.

in response to desperately.seeking.relief...   I see your point regarding your experiences with the dental school. Most dental schools will use patients as teaching instruments to include clipboards, lengthy discussions, etc. Having your brother-in-law in the next room does not help. I am sorry to hear of your experience and encourage you to try again. Dental schools need patients to work on and the tougher the better.

I see two clinics is Reno and can provide additional information if needed. In addition, of the 300+ clinics in CA, I suspect a handful do not require residency. I will look at keep you posted.

thank you to everyone who cared enough to give their suggestions etc. and caring enough to reply, that in itself is a huge comfort to me. I would definately go to a dentist and ask for a free consultation as u suggested however that would only allow me to know how much everything would cost, i cant get a job to save my life because no one will hire me with my teeth the way they are so even knowing how much it will cost, how would i pay?

id gladly go to cali but the free clinics ive found in cali require you to be a resident and have proof of residency. i dont have that since im not a resident. do you know of any clinics that dont require residency? its crazy how they have 360 clinics and vegas has none lol. goes to show how vegas is a me me me city. you said you found a couple of clinics, ar eyou sure they are dental clinics? from what i can tell, they only free clinics in vegas are medical, not dental. I contacted the dental school here and was told that i would have to come in for a evaluation to see if theyd accept me into the program which would require proof of employment as well as having a problem that would benefit the students to help you with. if you pass that phase, you will be put on a list to wait for a opening for that procedure and you will have to pay upfront before getting the procedure. the list of procedures they give had prices which werent that much better then going to a professional licensed dentist. from what i was told, extractions and dentures are the most requested procedure and hard to come by so not to hold my breath.

Im a little phobic about the school setting also because a few years ago, my brother in law went to see a dentist for a cleaning so i figured id make a appointment too just to see how much it would cost. when i got there i had to have xrays taken then the dentist came in with about 7 dental students who were all staring at me with clipboards while my mouth was propped open. i was so embarrassed because not only did i feel violated, but my brother in law was in the next room which wasn't really a room, it was more like a hospital ER where youre seperated by curtains and he could hear everything. They were talking about me and not having propper dental care as though he knew me and my situation. i had to hold my tears back so hard, i wanted to cry and run. my dental problems have nothing to do with bad dental hygiene, i used to be bulimic. When i was leaving the dentists, the receptionist said "im so sorry, that was so wrong of him." because everyone in the office had heard about the girl with such bad teeth. apparently i was the joke of the day in their office. so you can understand, even if the dental schools here didnt charge that much, id have a hard time going... but still would if it would mean an end to the torture. i dont know what to do anymore, i feel like ive exhausted every avenue.

When i was a child, i was severely abused. I made it though by telling myself that life would get better when i was older. it hasnt. i dont even know what happiness feels like, its a foreign concept to me, and as much of a myth as unicorns are. i dont know what to do. if it werent for my husband, id be homeless. he'd help me if he could but we barely get by as it is. begging for help is the only option i see for myself, otherwise its a life of pain and being shunned by society.

in response to desperately.seeking.relief...   Hello ... get a baseline by going to any local dentist and ask for a free evaluation. Most dentists want your business as bad as you need their services. They do not need to know your financial situation in detail. Simply let them know that you are thinking of switching dentists and need a bunch of work and would like a free evaluation. Dollar signs will roll in their mind and you should receive a quick invite. Try to get three opinions to determine the best approach. Once you have done, you will have a road-map for what is needed.

Are you able to commute? I only see a couple of clinics in Nevada but over 360 in California. I have done extensive research on dental schools and although they charge a discount rate, if you can find a dental student in need of completing specific procedures, you stand to save a considerable amount more. If you have a bunch of work that is needed, you might consider Mexico. Various locations in Mexico offer dental solutions at a fraction of the US fees.

        Take care and God Bless!

The only thing I would suggest to you is go to the hospital emergency. You need to now be on antibiotics to get that infection gone first. I had to do that before the dentist would touch mine. I had asked why and the dentist told me for the needles will not take and I would feel everything that they were doing regarding pulling some out. Also rinse with sea salt that helps alot.

Currently my face is swollen to the point that it looks like I've gone a couple of rounds with mike tyson because of a abscess from a toothache and I think its infected because I feel sick, I have the chills etc. Im in so much pain and its thanksgiving, yay! I havent had much to be thankful for in a long time. I live in vegas and I cant get a job to save my life. NO one will hire me and I cant blame them, who would want a toothless freak greeting their customers? I need help, DESPERATELY. There are no free clinics here and the dental schools will only help you if you pay upfront and its not that much cheaper then a regular dentist. Im desperate. I was raised to believe that people help others when in need but since i began losing my teeth, ive realised how naive i am... people only help others when they stand to get something from it. Like those tv shows where they help someone redo their house and the community lends a helping hand... do you think anyone would donate their time and building supplies if the cameras werent there? No. In this day and age, its every man/woman for him/herself. If ANYONE can help me, please, im in so much pain and I have no money. Im so tired of not having any teeth, im so tired of the pain, im so tired of the shame. There has to be someone out there who could help me. Otherwise, what hope do I have?

My teeth have all rotted at the gums instead of where they usaly do and the dentist said it is cause of my dry mouth. I did find a free clinic to take my teeth out but once there out they dont offer dentures. Is there anyone who will give them free or at a VERY low cost? We are living on my husbands SS and it is only 1500 a month and it isnt even paying our bills. Of course we were not expecting this tragedy and didn't have insurance as he had lost his job 6 months prior to his death. He left me with large medical bills and of course no insurance. We had gotten behind on our rent so unfortunately I was forced to move from the place we had lived for 15 years.
I stumbled upon even more bad luck when I accidently dropped my partial off my plate and the fell to the floor only to have my friends dog grab them before I could and he ate them as I cried in front of him. Now as I desperately need to get a job I have only three teeth on top and look awful not to mention I have no teeth to chew up food. I need HELP! If anyone can offer me any suggestions please do! We are barely keeping our heads above water and now of all times my teeth are falling apart. I scrimped up enough cash to do a consult and was told I need 11,000 in work. I would settle just to get the three teeth that are causing me pain done first, but even that seems out of reach. My credit has been shot in the last five months and I couldnt get financing to help with even a portion of the bill. Anyone that could point me in the right dirrection for discounted dental care, or any resource what so ever would be greatly appreciated. Im in California and cheap dentistry is hard to come by.

In this case I am curious to know what is being recommended for 17k ... this is a bunch of money:) After helping people over the years, I have seen amounts close to 30k though. Dentures will be a much smaller fraction of 17k. I suspect your dentist is recommending root canals, crowns, bridges, partials, etc.? Consult with another dentist ... in fact, consult with two more. You will have a better understanding of next steps by have a total of three opinions. Take care and God Bless!

in response to KKmommaof2...   Hello ... I have helped many people over the years and unfortunately, this is not the first time a father has not paid child support which really stinks - dead beat fathers. Typically, when you go after the father for child support and win, the state will garnish wages - has that happened in your case? If not, contact the state and asked about garnishment.

Medicaid can be a good thing. Many people I encounter do not have it but need it. Call around and look for a dentist that accepts Medicaid (many do). Let them know the total amount of work needed and create a plan. They might not be able to fix everything at one time and will need to spread the treatment out over many months. Try to stay with the same dentist as well - providing you find a good one:) Take care and God Bless!

Hi. I got back from my consultation with the dentist today and My estimated charges was 17,710.00. This is not for cosmetic work, mind you... this is just so I can eat. I am 33 years old. I need dentures, but he refuses to do it because I am young and SOME of the roots of my teeth are still in tact. My husband is self employed and only makes about 50,000 a year for our family of 6. We live in california and it is not cheap, nothing is. Not food or gas or clothing for our kids. We don't spend needlessly, we dont buy video games or junk food. I make most things from scratch. I can no longer eat. I have been able to tolorate 1/2 a baked potatoe in the last 4 days and I am living off coffee. I am so so tired from lack of food, I need help. Please if you have any information, any dentist that will just pull my teeth and give me dentures, please please let me know. Again, we can not pay alot. I have about 200.00 a month to work with here, and I have bad credit. Care credit or things of the sort are not an option and I have no relatives to turn to as they are all just as broke as we are. Please help me.

Hello I want to start with the fact that the pain ive been in for the last 9 years is unreal...insane headaches, toothaches, earaches etc due to the unhealthy rotting mouth i have. I am a 27 year old single mother of 2, a 4yr old girl named Taylor and a 1 1/2yr old boy named Bryson. They heve diff fathers both have been sued for child support but do not nor have not payed a dime. I have 7 teeth on the top all but 1 are rotting and a missin front tooth, 8 1/2 on the bottom all rotting, and no back teeth to chew with. I DO have Medicaid but seem to get dentist who just make me wait for months at a time and yet ive had nothin done but a few teeth pulled. Can someone help me out in finding a dentist that will change my life. Please help Please...Thank you for your time!!

in response to karatebox...   Hi Karatebox ... you have your hands full without question. Insurance is great but unfortunately, insurance is very limited regarding coverage. Most providers will only pay 50% +/- depending on the services needed. I suspect the total fee is running close to 4k for 4 root canals - yes? Ensure your dentist is in the preferred provider list for your insurance. If you have confirmed they are in the list of approved providers, contact your insurance company to confirm the allowable dollar amount for a root canal. Once you have this, return to your dentist and prepare to challenge:)

I have helped countless people over the years with dental issues and feel 4k is high (providing the total is around 4k:)). I have helped people to shop around for the best deals. It sound funny, but shopping around for the best dental deal is very doable. Since you know what is needed and have insurance, you are in the drivers seat. I suspect you can save additional money by having 2 of the 4 completed at the same time - providing you have the patience to sit in the chair that long!:)

Most on this thread are not so lucky - most do not have insurance and are typically unemployed which is a double whammy:) Take care and God Bless!
