I am a 52 year old female that is living on $9.00 per hour with no insurance of any kind.  I have not been able to afford to go to a dentist for several years now and I am in danger of losing enough teeth that I won't be able to eat.  I don't want to lose my teeth and have spent a lot of years and money trying to take care of them.  I have had my wisdom teeth pulled and am in danger of losing the only other teeth I can use to chew food. The back teeth on both sides of my mouth in the bottom of my mouth have broken apart.  They had so much filling in them and now they are just pieces left.  I can not chew anything for fear of breaking them even more and being in constant pain.  I just need to have the massive fillings put back in my mouth for the time being.  I can not afford to have crowns at this time and I just want to be able to keep the teeth.  Can you please help me.

Dr B, some people just have bad teeth due to genetics too. To chastise someone because they have bad teeth is not ethical or professional at all. You have just passed judgement on someone without really knowing what the issue is and without a physical evaluation...Shame on you.

If you are 52 years old, lost lots of teeth and have huge fillings......replacing them with one more huge filling will not help. You state that they are weak and breaking.  Another filling will surely do the rest of the teeth in.  A filling on an older tooth breaks the tooth.  A crown is the correct product that you need, that is if you want to keep what is left.  My question is how did they get so bad?  I am 57 years old, have all my teeth but do not eat junk food, or sip on sodas all day.  What I have found in my own practice is that patients with your same scenario are grazers, nibblers, carb addicts, and addicted to sodas of any kind.  The acid in the soda breaks down the hardness of the enamel, the sugar in the soda is the food for the bacteria which in turn make another kind of acid that is actually stronger than hydrochloric acid and this is what causes cavities.  Not brushing before bed adds more problems, cavities, and not having all your teeth can actually make you grind at night causing fractures to the weak teeth in turn breaking them while eating yogurt.  You could always take out the rest of your teeth and have dentures placed.  There are just lots of things to do.  I am a dentist in Texas, I do plenty of free work for the poor and would love to help but what really helps is educating people so they stop doing what actually caused the damage.

Hi joannay

It sounds like you have a very painful mouth ! If you go to this link   http://free-and-low-cost-dental-help-p-2.app-sl-1.aidpage.com/ , there are some ideas listed that might help you finance cosmetic dentistry if that is what you are looking for . I just added( 5/22/08) a link to a new  program ( medical credit card ) that may help in your situation . I hope this helps ! Having a mouth that hurts can make it so that you can't think of anything else.

I will keep you in my prayers ,

I had to leave work early today b/c my front top cap came out and I had to go to a dentist to glue it back in! I have only one real tooth left, which is filled in the back..and the rest of my teeth are caps and they are falling out. I cannot eat and I cannot smile anymore..I am losing weight, have health problems and am only 37 years old. Currently, I a working on my masters in criminal justice and trying to improve my financial situation!! I have even written to  Oprah explaining my situation and asking if she knows of anyone who can help> I am a survivor of domestic violence and have lost teeth from the physical assualts as well as the inablity to work or pay for them while I was in the controlling and abusive relationship.

I am still young and want to have my confidence as well as ability to eat back..please lets find a way to fix our situations.

God bless all of you in need and you are in my prayers!

We are  family of 3 and in the last 15 years have never worked for an employer that has provided dental insurance. SO WE HAVE none. My boy is 12 and has not seen a denist in years just because of the cost. We both work, but do not have great jobs. Now I need to go see someone because of a real bad tooth ache. But, it most likely will cast 150 just for them to do anything, and could be 500 just for one tooth easly. We can not afford this with higher gas and food cost, along with everything else we try to keep up with. nothing is cheap anymore, but our wages.

I am in a situation where I too need dental work and although my husband who works (I don't - I'm home with our 3 kids), he's not offered dental insurance and he makes more money than you, not bragging, but it doesn't allow us to afford dental regardless.  Dental work is extremely costly for anyone - $9.00, $13.00, especially when you start adding in family members, who should also get dental care on a regular basis.  I'm like you where I let things go because I SIMPLY could NOT afford to go to the dentist, and now I'm either going to LOSE all my teeth (already had to have a few pulled) OR I am going to have to find some type of assistance out there that doesn't require you have good credit on top of everything else.  There's dental and health care lenders, but without perfect credit, you will be denied.  They'll loan you the money (if YOU have good credit, this may be an option for you - $9./hour or not -) known as www.carecredit.com interest free too for the first 12 mos, as long as you do not miss any scheduled monthly payments.  After that, it's 11.6 or up interest rates.  This is the only lender I know of that specifically deals with DENTAL and health needs.  I too would love to know what our country has for folks that need dental care like us, but I"ve found nothing.  Nothing that is worth getting - in the end, you're paying out of pocket money to get a dental Plan (not insurance) monthly or yearly, and what they discount isn't worth it at all - you are still looking at say 500.00 for a root canal - with the plan.  And so everyone knows who has insurance what we pay who do not, a root canal runs from 700 to 900 depending on the dentist - this is one root canal, one tooth - I like the person I"m responding to want to fix all my teeth and eventually return to "healthy" oral conditions.  Right now, I'm going when I can save up the money and am basically getting one tooth worked on every so many months - at this rate, I'll never save the teeth that need saving and probably won't get a bridge so I have a full set of teeth for years to come - You don't want to know what a Bridge runs!  (this is partial to what dentures are - the bridge could have 2 top and 2 bottom teeth and you're looking at no less than a grand!)  Yes please, if anyone knows of help out there, I'd love to hear about it too!  Real help!

I feel that not having dental work done and nice teeth has rbbed me of a much better life. My self esteem has suffered b.c of it. Where are the dentists that do pro bono work? Are there any nice dentists out there who would like to help? DOn't they get paid enough as it is. I called a place today to try and make an appt. b.c I heard that if you get approved, which i probably wont' that you can finance your dental work. Anyway, I called and they were booked until June. What are poor people to do? WHat choice do we have> we are not given an oppertunity to get dental work done. We don't have a few extra hundred or thousand (s) of dollars to get dental work done. We have to pay rent, electricity, food. I am scared. My teeth are in such bad shape that I have felt very depressed lately. I am not going to get on an antidepressant b.c I need dental work done. I don't know what I am going to do. that's why I am here. So, if any of you know anything, please email me at

Hello,

My name is John and i live in Brooklyn New York. I am 47 years old and have no teeth at all and i am currently unemployed. I am using a friends computer and even a free email address and although i have almost lost all hope i am still trying to hang in there by remaining positive.

I definitely need implants only i cannot afford them, my lower gum has receded to a dangerous level and it is practically non existent having a "Tiny Bit Left" although i am assuming my upper gum though gradually meeting the same fate still has some or enough left. I have been searching for help and have been unable to find any and i seldomly go out nowadays as i am very self conscious of my condition and it is very stressing making one feel as if they were not normal not to mention how much one notices and at the same time feels like the whole world itself is watching which makes one feel all the more self conscious and is mentally punishing.

I have reached a point where i fear for my health because my lower gum line has receded so badly that i realize this means my jaw bone structure can only be next and is at risk.I have no way of affording implants and with zero teeth and no place to turn to for help i have already had to give up on certain foods which i cannot eat because of my condition so the quality of my life has been drastically reduced for many reason's relating to my dental condition.

I am literally praying for a miracle not just as i type this but have been as each and every time i have tried i have not been able to find any adequate solution in the way of help meanwhile im sleeping less and this has taken quite a toll on me but all i can do is hang in there in the hope that somehow something positive happens before things get any worse. Right now my lower gum is "Less Than Half" of what a person's "Pinky Fingernail" would be like in size and at that one of a person whom naturally has a diminutive sized type of pinky/fingernail and neatly trimmed at that.. so as you can see the size of my lower gum is practically already non existent and the upper gumline well.. its not fairing off any better but at least it definitely has more of a general surface area still left to it although it is noticeably also steadily decreasing as well.

I do know what else to do or where else to go for help and can only hope and pray that someone see's this and realizes my plight and the degree of my current condition as im afraid if this gets any worse my jawline structure will be next if it hasn't already begun and somehow or someway decides to step in and intervene on my behalf realizing as well the degree or severity of both my current condition and so why the necessity.

I hope and pray though for everyone out there "Looking at this computer screen" whom are in a similar if not worse condition in the hope that yet another out there is touched and moved into acting in our behalf. Hang in there everyone and try to keep positive despite the situation which i know all too well, i wish i myself could help you all unfortunately i am currently in great need myself but i pray that a kinder soul will rise to occasion and reach out, never give up even when the chips are down.

If anyone can help please contact me at :

Hi everyone.  It is unfortunate to read all of these stories.   I  am in desperate need of dental work... before the infections get worse.  I do not have dental insurance, I cannot afford any dental work and due to my being on a debt management program... I cannot open up any credit cards (nor would the limit even be enough to cover all of the work needed) to pay for any dental work.

I am more than willing to be placed on some sort of payment plan, and will give monthly whatever I am able to afford.  At my last dental check up, I was told that I needed 4 root canals, 1 crown and that I have massive decay that has formed in the majority of my teeth.  I am in fear that my teeth will begin to fall out.  The pain from my back molar where the crown has fallen off some odd years ago is unbeareable.  Not to mention the teeth that need root canals... I am honest, trustworthy and begging for anyone to help me.  I am pleaing for someone to help me out, out of the goodness of their heart.  I will sign some sort of contract stating that I will make payments... anything.  Please email me:  rachelsnow12@hotmail.com

I am 37 years old, and I have only been to the dentist maybe 7 times in my life.  I just can't afford it.  I last visited the dentist about 3 years ago, and have just finished paying them.  I relocated to Las Vegas, and do not currently have dental insurance.  I broke a tooth yesterday, which in itself is really no big deal as all of my teeth are in terrible shape, but this one hurts badly.  I'm not being greedy and asking for free dental care.  I just need to find a dentist that will pull the tooth as cheaply as possible.  I only have about $20 until next Friday, when I get paid.

Dear Sahra,

You are to young to have ugly teeth.  I just wanted to suggest getting your yellow pages and there you will find some dentist email addresses in your area.   Try emailing them your pages and I just pray some decent dentist in your area will be willing to work with you to have you repay later when you get your degree.  Please give this a try and don't be scared.   I believe there must be one dentis in all of Orange park FL who could help.

Can someone please tell me why dentists wont take payment plans. There should be an emergency dental clinic where no patient will be turned away and not just to get your tooth pulled.  Comeon Dentists out there just because one person might not have paid you doesn't mean everyone wont.

Dear Eric,

I just wanted to say that I know how you feel and I'm very sorry that this country has no affordable dental services.  THis is a big shame that nobody in government has botherered to address this problem.

There should be dental schools for free or something like that to get more dentists working here.   I'm very mad and upset and I feel so bad.

My son is in need of dental work, and he has no dental insurance, or money to go to the dentist.  His gums are really in bad shape, and all of his teeth are bad.  He works so hard to provide for his family of 5, and it breaks my heart to see him in such pain.  I pray that someone knows of a free dental clinic in Texas that we could take him to.  God bless you.  A worried mother----

I am not sure how much this site is looked at but it seems it gets a lot of public views, so I'll give this one a try as I am not sure what else to do at this point. I am 21 Years old as of August 18th, 2007 and ever since I can remember back to I've had problems with my teeth. I have always brushed my teeth and never really been into sweets so much that I could imagine that having anything to do with my tooth decay. I have tried going to the dentist, but they always are wanting you to charge stuff to credit cards or require you to have good credit to take a loan out and all of that fancy stuff, and unfortunatly as for me living on my own since 16 years old due to parents divorce and parents going there opposite ways and me being adopted by my mothers ex-husband, I just decided to try to live on my own and going to school full time back from 2002-2004. In doing that, I have constantly been struggling and have pretty much ruined my credit and unable to save money. A few years back I was able to go to the dentist with the $350.00 I was able to save up, but we all know how far $350.00 gets you at the dentist. Anywho, bottom line is I need dental work, I have 2 teeth in the front that have had root canals, and was given fillings in each of those teeth to prepare them for some Porcelin Vaneers*Sp* but in the down time of me saving more money for those, the dental work that was done did not hold, so now basically I just have holes in my 2 front teeth, and I am unable to smile. I have 4 teeth in the back of my mouth that have holes in them, and it makes it hard for me to eat due to things hitting my nerves and it just makes for a very painful situation. I would just like some help, I have a decent job and I work very hard for my money, but unfortunatly I am unable to save much to get what I want done to my teeth because of bills and past debt. If there is no help offered I appreciate the time taken to read this, and there will be no hard feelings, as I understand there are way bigger problems out there now with the war on terrorism going on, and thank the troops for putting themselves on the line for us, so we don't have to be there. If there is any questions or further info needed feel free to call me @ 870-210-9244, My personal Cell # and I can be contacted at any time. Thank you! -Eric-

Hi everyone. Well my problems might not be as bad as some of yo mout there and I pray that all of you that really need it will find a solution. I understand how you all feel because my teeth are really bad as well. My confidence level decrease as the appearance of my teeth decrease. Sometimes I wake up sweating from nightmares of my teeth falling out. I dont make enough money to pay my bills and fix my teeth.I just found out that my front tooth has to be extracted because it is dead. Two of my front teeth are in terrible condition. I have been saving up money to have a temporary fillings on the tooth that is dead now. I have school from 9am to 4pm and work from 5pm to 10pm to 12am. I work 6 days a week and the thursday that I have off I take a literature class after day school. I am starting a fashion course starting in January 2008 and I am scared that I dont have enough confidence to do my presentations. I have gone to college for fashion marketing and wasnt able to complete, not because of my teeth (financial), however I did great with everything else but not with my presentations. I always started sweating. I am 25 years old and havent been on a date in over 1 1/2 years because of my teeth. I absolutetly hate smiling and I love laughing and smiling. I hope there is someone out there that could help me (after the people that really NEED it ofcourse). I live in Canada and although the healthcare is amazing the dentistry is still expensive. Thank you all and let me leave yo with one of my favourite quotes: "Being defeated is only temporary, giving up is what makes it permanent." If someone wants to help my phone # is 416 389 6538

My grandson, Fort Worth, Texas is 21; his teeth need to be saved. And really none of it is for pretty. All of his teeth need to be saved before he looses them all. He has no enamel and his teeth are weak therefore need attention...like yesterday. My grandson's teeth are far worse than even he realized. He wants to just save his teeth. After consulting with a dentist he was advised that if he doesn't have the work done he could lose them all; that they all will get cavities because the enamel is gone. Even though my grandaughter and her mom; as well as me will pitch in, there is no way we can come up with the figure we were quoted. PLEASE is there someone out there that knows a dentist will help him save his teeth before it is too late? Thanks for reading and replying to this post.

Hi It is really disgusting the way health care is in this country . There are so many people hurting and yet the money that we contribute in taxes doesn't support a program that will truly help anybody . It is so disheartening to read about all the people on this pagethat are SUFFERING with their mouths hurting and yet they have no recourse to take care of the problem. How can people survive like this ? I wish people in government in this country were forced to live as a person on minimum wage with no health insurance. I have a friend , who reminds me of the government . She told me "I think I finally came to the point where I can give everything up for God. " I said " o.k. , stop using your car and take the bus so that you understand what it is like for people who are less wealthy than you ." she said " I couldn't possibly do that , I have way too many important things to do ." Maybe the government has " too many important things to do " They need a knock on the side of the head , like I feel my friend needs. The government is similar to my friend in that she had wonderful things to say about what she would do , but when reality hit , she couldn't handle it. Something has to change !!!!!!!!!!!!! If you work for the government and you are reading the stories on this page , you already care more than the majority of government people. Please spread the word about what is going on. soulight
